
Every science product claims NGSS alignment. Curriculum directors know this, which is why the claim has stopped meaning much on its own. The useful question is not "is it aligned?" but "show me where, in an actual lesson, the practice happens."
Let us do that for the practice at the center of the modeling conversation: Science and Engineering Practice #2, Developing and Using Models.
What SEP #2 actually asks for
The Next Generation Science Standards define eight Science and Engineering Practices. Practice #2 is Developing and Using Models. The word that carries the weight is developing. The standard expects students to build, use, and revise models, not simply to interpret ones that were built for them.
That is a higher bar than most tools clear. A pre-built simulation lets students use a model. It does not, on its own, let them develop one.
Where it shows up in a lesson, concretely
Picture a middle school lesson on a predator-prey system. A checkbox version looks like this: students open a finished simulation, move a slider, and record what happens to the population graph. Alignment claimed. Practice not actually performed, because the model was already developed for them.
An aligned version looks different. Students are given the components, predators, prey, and a food source, then asked to build the model themselves. They decide which component affects which, and how strongly. They run it, compare the result to their prediction, and revise. When the population crashes for a reason they did not expect, they go back into the model and figure out why.
That revision loop is SEP #2 happening in real time. It also brings in Practice #5, Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking, because reasoning about how the variables interact is inherently quantitative.
Why the distinction is worth defending
Districts are accountable for standards, and increasingly for showing that the standard was actually taught, not just nominally covered. A crosswalk table that maps a product to standard codes is easy to produce and hard to trust. A lesson where you can point to the moment a student develops and revises a model is evidence you can put in front of a board.
The honest framing for a vendor conversation
When you evaluate a tool, ask it to show you the developing, not the using. Where does the student build the model? Where do they revise it? If the answer is "they explore our simulation," that is Practice #2's second verb without its first. The standard asks for both.
